First Sausalito Workshop

First Sausalito Workshop

The purpose of our workshops is to first show what we do. Second is to give an understanding of the impact the waste from the fashion industry has on the planet. Finally, to have fun and transform something old into a favorite piece to wear.

If you don't already know, When Simon Met Ralph is an Anti-Brand brand. We believe in using what is already on hand. Be it vintage, seconds, last season or dead stock yardage, there is always a way to keep it from the landfill. Our method of saving the planet includes but not limited to fading, dyeing, printing, felting, using latex or resin.

In this workshop we chose to demo our silk-screen printing techniques. Each participants was asked to bring in a garment they already own. Together we transformed the clothes into something special, giving each piece a second life, to be worn again and again.

In this workshop we had a skirt, shirt and jacket. We try to only work with natural fibers and urge our participants to do the same. The skirt is white cotton, the shirt is white linen and the jacket is black cotton. The first discussion  is if the garments have special meaning or value, next is how the garment will react with our inks. We then guide the attendees in pinning the articles to the table and how that will affect the ink placement.

Next up, choosing the color of the pigment. The skirt is off white and the others white. We then discuss the importance of the angle of the squeegee and the pressure applied while silkscreening.

Once all printed, we broke to have an intimate Q&A about our work and upcoming projects.

When dry we heat set the prints and said farewell.

It was a very good day with three very wonderful ladies.
